IN PRODUCTION

A project about our American Dream, the passage of time, cycles of change, and the uncomfortable journey of a southerner who returns to the land of his birth after half a lifetime away, to reckon with the legacy of this region and the way his family figured into that history.

My Father's Gun (Jan. 2026)

In the history of America, there have been a series of conflicts that each threatened to destroy our nation. Our great constitutional experiment survived each conflict with a renewed promise of a more perfect union, yet after each event, some chose to try and maintain the status quo by any means possible.

We fought a revolution. Then we fought a war with ourselves to end the scourge of slavery. We survived global pandemics and wars. 100 years after the civil war, we had another bloody struggle to grant equal constitutional rights to all Americans. Growing up, I was taught that we had overcome these issues.

Today, I see the same cycles of hatred and fear that fester like a wound that won't heal. My birthplace, the Black Belt of Alabama, has been ground zero for much of this bloodletting. After moving away in my 20s, I am returning (30 years later) to stir up the ghosts of my ancestors, ask some uncomfortable questions, and try to find a reckoning with the darkness that underlies the American experience.

From the stories that I've already uncovered, we'll explore genocide, human trafficking, terrorism, indoctrination, politics, racism, and other stories from my family history. This is not a story I'm eager to tell, yet it needs to be told. We can't progress as a nation until we address the sins of our past.
